The mind is powerful. We can use it to create whatever we want because, essentially, what we think on becomes our reality (Proverbs 23:7). Our thoughts shape our circumstances, but the tongue is just as powerful. Why? Because we can literally speak life or death into situations, relationships, or even a person’s spirit. The Bible offers several verses about the tongue, and its power.  An often-quoted verse is Proverbs 18:21: The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit (NIV). But then there is Proverbs 15:4: “The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit.”(NIV)

Wow—think about that. The words we say can bring peace to conflict, add a positive perspective, bring revelation and understanding to a problem, or encourage and refresh someone who is having a difficult time. That is great news! Then on the other end of spectrum, the words we utter can deflate a person’s hopes and dreams, discourage a person, incite a person with anger, or worse, break a relationship.

The words we sow into others’ lives are important, and even affect our own lives in return. The Holy Bible says in Hosea 10:12, “Plant the good seeds of righteousness, and you will harvest a crop of love.” (NLT) Sowing life with our words brings a great harvest!

Controlling our tongues can be hard; sometimes it seems impossible to hold our words back. When we don’t show restraint and rush to speak on impulse, the result can be heartache and deep regret. But there is hope in the Holy Spirit. Press in to Him and He will give you words full of grace, love, and compassion for every situation. He’ll even let you know when to speak.

Have faith to sow power words!
