A Call to Our High Priests to Play the Man!

Kimberly N. Alleyne | Publisher and Chief Editor | Commentary

Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the Lord do that which seemeth him good. – II Samuel 10:12 (KJV)

It has been said that a man carries the world on his shoulders. Surely with all of the roles demanded of manhood – husband, father, provider, protector and, servant leader – the pressures that come with these responsibilities can sometimes make the weight feel unbearable. But be encouraged to play the man and to be of good courage on every side!

The High PriestAs we, God’s ambassadors in this earthly realm that we temporarily inhabit, continue to stand united on the Word of God, from glory to glory, waiting to see the parting of the heaves announcing His return, we must redeem the time. God is calling you, our men, to hold on and to play the man! The time is now to be the men God called you to be, to walk the paths He carved for you, to be the holy priests of your homes, churches, communities and nations.

Redeem the time!

Society would have you to think that men are not needed in the African American community and that they have no value or purpose, but this is a falsehood. We need you. We need you and we need you to be healthy to guide us – our people, our families, our children, our hopes – into the next generation. Make no mistake. You are yet the priests of our homes and the defenders of Christ’s body and His church. We trust you with our hearts, our visions and we need you.

You are men of God, prayer warriors, against the enemy, humbled servants, leaders of missions and movements, protectors of dreams, faithful husbands to your wives, givers of hope and assurance to your sons and daughters, and loyal and trustworthy comrades to your friends. We need you. My, my, my, yes; how we need you!

A man’s power is like a roaring tornado tearing through a helpless sky. It cannot be stopped or hindered and yields only when ready. When a healthy, determined, strong man who is submitted to God is at the helm of any charge, there is no storm that cannot be endured and no battle that cannot be won.

How do you play the man?

  • By serving the Lord in spirit and in truth.
  • By serving the Lord in season and out of season.
  • By being the protector of the “good thing” God blesses you with.
  • By being a protector of your family.
  • By endeavoring to decrease, to die to self so that only the image and heart of Christ remains.
  • By praying and interceding – for your family, Your leaders, Your churches, Your nation, Your world and yourself – without ceasing.
  • By submitting yourself in worship, without restraint or fear. By pursuing spiritual wisdom and maturity.
  • By being a grateful and gracious steward.
  • By embracing good conduct. (holy and proper conversation.)
  • By taking care of your physical body. We need you!

Live for God. Pray. Read God’s Word. Eat well. Exercise. Live a healthy lifestyle. See your doctor regularly. There is no weakness in a doctor’s visit.

We need you! Truly, the man is the heartbeat of a people. Whether you’re a brother, nephew, uncle, cousin, father, son, or grandfather—we need you! Whether you have children of your own, or are a mentor to someone else’s child – we need you!

Be encouraged and play the man as you battle society’s stereotypes and the wiles of the enemy. Show up. Be present. Be accountable. Take care of yourself. Take care of your home. Serve the Lord with all your heart. And play the man because we need you!

Be strong and let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God. The LORD will do what is good in his sight. II Samuel 10:12 (NIV)
